SoundLab Sessions – The Songwriter's Challenge!

Ever wondered what it takes to write a hit song in any genre? In SoundLab Sessions, you'll step into the shoes of a professional songwriter and producer as you collaborate with fellow musicians to create original songs from scratch—all in just one session!

At the start of every class, we'll spin the SoundLab Wheel to randomly select a genre, musical key, and creative theme. From Pop and Rock to Country, Musical Theatre, Jazz, R&B, Indie, and beyond, you'll discover the unique ingredients that make each style of music work.

Then the challenge begins...

Working together as a creative team, you'll spend the next two hours writing, arranging, and performing an original song inspired by the wheel's selections.

What You'll Learn

Genre Exploration

Discover the characteristics, techniques, and songwriting formulas that define different genres of music. Learn how melody, harmony, rhythm, structure, and lyrical style change from one genre to another.

Songwriting Fundamentals

Develop practical songwriting skills by learning how to create memorable melodies, strong lyrics, engaging chord progressions, and effective song structures.

Music Theory in Action

Learn essential music theory concepts including keys, scales, chords, rhythm, and harmony—but in a practical way that directly applies to the music you're creating.

Creative Collaboration

Work alongside other singers, instrumentalists, and songwriters to brainstorm ideas, solve creative challenges, and bring original songs to life.

Musical Adaptability

Build confidence creating music outside your comfort zone and learn how professional musicians adapt to different styles and creative briefs.

Performance & Presentation

Share your creations with the group and develop the confidence to perform, present, and discuss your musical ideas.

Fees, When, and Where

Fees: $60.00 + GST per person per session
Schedule: Classes are held fortnightly on Sundays from 10am to 12pm.
